Return of Service

A court or other administrative agency notifies a defendant or respondent of forthcoming proceedings by service of process. A court officer usually hand delivers court paperwork and a summons to the defendant at his home or workplace.

As a rule, process servers strive to serve a person at least three times before giving up. All of these attempts are conducted at different times and days in order to maximize the chances of serving the documents. This is because some jurisdictions have a limit of three.
